HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PEARLS.

A pearl is a delicate natural substance that must be kept free from dirt
and chemicals such as perfume and hair spray (never spray directly on
pearls).  Perspiration also has a damaging effect on pearls. In order to
protect your pearls from discoloration and deterioration, wipe them
frequently with a damp cloth, do not clean pearl with harsh detergent
or Jewellery cleaner.  A drop of mild detergent in warm water works best.

Restring pearls at least once a year to keep the Jewellery looking its
best.  Remember the thread is subject to stretching and fraying and
might break.

Pearls should be stored in a soft pouch or in a separate compartment
in your Jewellery box to avoid scratching. Never store pearls in a safe
deposit box for long periods of time…. This environment can dry the
pearls causing discoloration, cracking or peeling.
South Sea Pearl
Primarily sourced from Australia, Indonesia, Burma
and the Philippines. South Sea pearls generally
range in sizes from 8mm to 15mm. 16mm to 20mm
rare.    Pinctada Maxima will produce a pearl and
each oyster can grow only one pearl at a time.
Good quality, South Sea pearls usually take two
years to grow.

Akoya Cultured Pearls
Akoya pearls are the commonly known saltwater
pearls. The Akoya producing mollusk - the pinctada
fucata martensil - produces pearls between two and
ten millimeters in size. Each shell produces four to five
pearl at a time with a nacre thickness of approximately
1/10 to 2/10 of a millimeter. The growing time for most
akoya pearls is from six to eighteen months. Oftentimes,
the longer the cultivation timeline, the higher the value
of the pearl.

Freshwater Cultured Pearls
Originally produced in Japan, over 90% of the world's
freshwater pearls now come from China
Freshwater pearls are the "odd man out" of cultured
pearling as they are not produced by the oceanic
Pinctada family of pearl oysters. In fact, they are not
produced by an oyster at all. In China, most cultured
pearls are farmed in varieties of freshwater mussels
such as Hyriopsis and Cristaria. Each shell can
produce up to 100 pearls simultaneously.
